March is a time to celebrate women, and in doing so, we honour one of our most powerful abilities—creativity. Women are natural creators, not just in the literal sense of bringing life into the world, but in the way we shape ideas, nurture relationships, innovate solutions, and express ourselves. However, in a society that values productivity over intuition, many of us have lost touch with our creative side. We have been conditioned to prioritise efficiency, logic, and output—often at the expense of play, imagination, and self-expression. The result? Burnout, stress, and a disconnect from what truly nourishes us.
Time is something we all have equal amounts of: 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week, and about 8,760 hours in a year. However, there are many factors that determine how someone can spend their finite amount of time. Women need to factor in work and home responsibilities, personal interests and societal expectations.
How can women reclaim their creativity?
Women need to reclaim permission to be unavailable from their roles as partners, parents or professionals and take uninterrupted time for creative pursuits.
To do this, we first need to redefine what creativity is. Many people define creativity as something that has to do with the arts alone. This isn’t necessarily true. Eve Rodsky, author of the best-selling book Fair Play and the upcoming book Find Your Unicorn Space, explained that creativity is any task that helps you enter a ‘flow state’. a mental state of being completely absorbed in an activity, to the point where you lose track of time and distractions. This can be training for a race, trying new recipes for dinner, hosting, drawing, reading or knitting a scarf.
Step 1: Unlock Your Creative Power
Too often, women hold back their creativity out of fear—fear of judgment, imperfection, or not meeting expectations. When you reclaim your innate creativity, you reclaim your power. It helps you think differently, solve problems with confidence, and express yourself freely. Creativity is a tool for transformation—one that brings clarity, purpose, and joy into your life.
Step 2: Embrace Your Authentic Expression
Your creativity is a reflection of who you are. When you allow yourself to create without fear—whether through writing, movement, design, or new ideas—you step into your true power. By embracing your creative self, you cultivate deeper connections and inspire others to do the same.
Step 3: Design a Life That Celebrates Your Creativity
Reclaiming your creativity means making space for it—whether through personal passion projects, self-care rituals, or a career that values innovation and expression. Creativity isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for growth and fulfillment. Prioritise activities that nourish your imagination, surround yourself with supportive communities and give yourself permission to create without limits. When you trust your creative instincts, you unlock new opportunities and reclaim the freedom to shape your own path.
Not Sure Where to Start with Your Art? We’ve got you covered.
- Set the Scene
Creating the right environment can enhance the benefits of your session. Try these simple steps:
- Find a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be interrupted.
- Light a candle or incense to set a calming atmosphere.
- Play soft music or ambient sounds to help you relax.
- Choose Your Medium
There are no rules—pick the medium that feels most natural to you. Some artistic options include, remember you can also choose to dance, cook, design etc.:
- Painting – Express emotions through color and texture.
- Sketching – Release tension with freeform drawing.
- Collaging – Cut and assemble images that resonate with you.
- Clay Sculpting – Shape your stress into something tangible.
- Start with a Creative Prompt
Here are some art therapy-inspired prompts to guide your session:
- Draw your current mood – Let your emotions take shape on the page.
- Paint your stress, tension, or frustration – Turn emotions into colours and textures.
- Draw a tree that represents your life – Symbolize your growth, challenges, and strengths.
- Sketch your safe space – A place, real or imagined, where you feel at peace.
- Write down a fear, then paint over it – A symbolic act of release.
- Doodle without lifting your pen – Let your subconscious take over.
- Fill a page with repetitive patterns – Engage in a meditative flow.
- Paint to music – Let sounds inspire movement and form.
- Let Go of Perfection
Remember, that art isn’t about making “good” art—it’s about self-expression. Scribble, splash, layer textures—whatever feels right at the moment. There’s no wrong way to do it.
- Reflect on Your Work
Once you’ve finished, take a moment to sit with your creation. Ask yourself:
- What emotions emerged as I created this?
- What colours or patterns stand out?
- Does my artwork reflect how I feel inside?
Reflection helps bridge the gap between what’s on the page and what’s happening internally, allowing you to gain insight into your emotions.
